History of the Office Cubicle
In the 1960’s furniture designer Robert Propst invents something he calls the office cubicle because he thinks the typical American office is a “wasteland” that “saps vitality, blocks talent, frustrates accomplishment. It is the daily scene of unfulfilled intentions and failed effort.”
Wow. Mr. Propst probably never images his “cubicle” would ever earn an infamous reputation as one of the most despised symbols of a bad office job. Yet, he also has a great vision for the way office workers could be productive:
- Workers need autonomy and independence
- Office space should be flexible to fit any given need
- Workers need to stand as often as they sit
- Offices should encourage “meaningful traffic” among workers
This describes Mr. Propst’s Action Office concept, considered the most successful office designs of the last 30 years. Since 1998, an estimated 40 million Americans are working in 42 different versions of his Action Office-designed work spaces … and cubicles remain a part of them.
The fact is, offices are often noisy. Managers typically have more space than the junior staff. Privacy is hard to come by. A productive work ethic competes with a plethora of distractions. And your cubicle is still your own. Give it a custom name plate!
