Kelleys Island Part of The Battle of Lake Erie History

In September 2013, America commemorated The Battle of Lake Erie Bicentennial with one of the largest celebrations in the Lake’s history. Tall Ships representing both the United States and Great Britain gathered for a parade of sail, which took place along the shorelines and in many host ports prior to a re-enactment of the War of 1812’s Battle of Lake Erie, at the actual battle site.

Kelleys Island, Ohio, located on the western shore of Lake Erie, was honored as host port for one of the Tall Ships, offering ship tours and cruises throughout this family event.

To mark 200 years as part of the history of The Battle of Lake Erie, the Kelleys Island Tall Ship Group installed a monument made from a limestone pedestal donated by Northern Ohio Cut Stone and designed by Chuck Herndon, featuring a bronze casting of Kelleys Island by Russ Mast and a stainless steel engraved plaque made by PlaqueMaker. Along with the Bicentennial logo, the plaque reads, “In Commemoration of The Battle of Lake Erie Bicentennial, and of The Kelleys Island Tall Ship Celebration, which took place August 30th, through September 2nd, 2013. The Battle of Lake Erie firmly established The United States Navy as an international maritime power. Kelleys Island is part of that history.”

Below, members of the Kelleys Island Tall Ship Group share this special celebration.
